1940, London, England. In search of a light in the darkness, British forces assemble a secret arm of covert and clandestine operators to take the fight to the Nazis. They were the Special Operations Executive (SOE). Sir William Stephenson was charged to train Canadian and American operatives at one of the SOE establishments, the Special Training School 103 known as Camp X in Whitby, Ontario. These men and women joined an international X force: a network of spies trained in the art of sabotage, propaganda and illicit warfare with a mission to intercept and infiltrate the enemy.
X represents the faceless sacrifice and commitment of countless SOE operatives.
The X keeps the light in the darkness alive by honouring those who can only be identified as X…
Long before James Bond became a cult figure the premise of his daring operations, suave nature and his cool head, the foundations of international intelligence were being brokered from an office in the Rockefeller Center by a Man Called Intrepid.
In 1940, newly appointed British Prime Minister Winston Churchill instigated coordination of
three secret intelligence departments that formed recently before the outbreak of WWII.
It was the Special Operations Executive (SOE), nicknamed the Ministry of Gentlemanly Warfare and the Man Called Intrepid was Sir William Stephenson (SWS). Heading up the North American Branch of the SOE, he was a decorated WWI pilot, inventor, entrepreneur, Canadian married to an American tobacco heiress, and spy master.
SWS was Churchill’s man to convince President Franklin Roosevelt and J Edgar Hoover to help the war efforts and trained spy’s in Camp X in Whitby Ontario. The foundations being built by SWS and his network led to establishing the OSS and in turn the CIA.

Canadian Intelligence Branch – E Tenebris Lux and the
Compass Rose
A Personnel Branch of the Canadian Forces with the motto of E Tenebris Lux (From Darkness, Light) now seen on the perpetual timer is a continued homage from our first Intrepid Dive watch. The Intrepid X caseback displays the Compass Rose badge that recognises the worldwide scope of the Intelligence Branch responsibilities. Two daggers have been added to the Compass Rose to commemorate the cloak and dagger operations conducted by the SOE.
Canadian Intelligence Corps – Action From Knowledge
With the rapid requirement for intelligence during WWII, the Corps were recognized in 1942. Pulling from universities, businesses and industry, the CF Intelligence Corps (C Int C) were revered for out-of-the box tactics. During WWII they were effective at counterintelligence behind enemy lines halting sabotage attempts and remained in Europe after the war to disband the Nazis.
The C int C motto – Action From Knowledge, has been engraved at the bottom of the caseback design to remind us to make intelligent decisions before commanding action, like many intelligence operatives would have been challenged with.
From the Camp X Hydra, a telecommunications relay station to the Westland Lysander aircraft that smuggled agents into Europe by night and finally to the Bugatti and Rolls Royce race cars driven in greatest European Grand Prix, the SOE agents had some of the most sophisticated tools in their experiences.
It is with this sophistication and reliability that the extension of the Intrepid Dive Watch series could only be aptly assembled with an automatic movement fit for the caliber and precision of the Special Operations Executive and their illicit tactics.
