When King George VI quoted the 1908 Minnie Haskins’ poem in his 1939 Christmas broadcast, he recognized that men of faith and soldiers of freedom were desperately needed to overcome the darkness engulfing wartime Europe.
Sir William Stephenson, a Canadian patriot who headed the British Security Coordination task force, established and trained as many as 2000 Allied spies at Camp X, and carried out clandestine operations throughout WWII, answered this call. Stephenson, whose intelligence code name was Intrepid, represents the courageous, resolute, and often untold effort of Canadians who worked in the shadows to make way for the light of freedom.
To this day the flame lit by the work of Stephenson still burns. The Canadian Forces Intelligence Branch, whose history is rooted in Stephenson’s work, keep the motto “E Tenebris Lux”: Out of the darkness, light.
WWCo honours our light in the darkness, The Man Called Intrepid, and pays tribute to the modern day contributions of the CFIB through the inclusion of the inspiring motto on the case back of every Intrepid diver watch
To further represent Canada’s service in all directions, every WWCo timepiece is embossed with a compass rose, the preeminent symbol used by the Canadian Forces Intelligence Branch as well as other intelligence agencies that were shaped by the work of Sir William Stephenson such as the CIA and NATO.
At WWCo, the compass rose reflects the connection all Canadians have; to each other and to the exceptional contributions Canada has made to the free world . Wear your history.
